Smart System to Prevent Accidents at Railway Crossings

Innovative Solution Using Sensors, Project by Students of Shahu Polytechnic

Students from the Department of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering at MVPS’s Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Polytechnic have made a significant contribution to railway safety by developing a project named “Smart Railway Crossing and Obstacle Detection System.” Through this project, an effective combination of an automated railway gate control system and an instant obstacle detection system at railway crossings has been realized.

The female students developed two important subsystems. With the help of ultrasonic sensors, obstacles on the railway tracks are detected and immediate notifications are sent to the train pilot. Additionally, the process of automatically opening and closing the railway gates using loco sensors installed at the crossing is implemented. Guidance from Prof. G.B. Dhangale and Head of Department Prof. P.G. Deshmukh proved crucial during testing. Furthermore, to make the system more reliable, the project was enhanced using weight control system mechanisms. Students Gayatri Katre, Chaitali Gurav, Vedika Kakar, and Vedika Kedar successfully completed this project. Principal Prof. Prashant Patil congratulated all the students.

How the Smart System Works:

  • Modern microcontrollers and ultrasonic sensors measure train speed, automatically closing and opening the railway gate accordingly.

  • If any obstacle is found on the track, the system immediately alerts the train pilot. A key feature of this system is that it operates fully automatically, minimizing human intervention.

  • By eliminating human error, safety at railway crossings increases. Additionally, wireless communication allows info-control to send alert data to the control room.
