‘Smart System’ to Prevent Railway Accidents
Research by Female Students of Rajarshi Shahu Polytechnic

Female students of MVP’s Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Polytechnic have developed a system named “Smart Railway Crossing and Obstacle Detection System” for railway safety. This project provides automated control of railway gates as well as detection of obstacles on railway tracks, which the students express confidence can prove effective in avoiding railway accidents in the future.
Third-year polytechnic students Gayatri Katre, Chaitali Gurav, Vedika Kedar, and Vedika Kakad developed this project. They received guidance from Principal Prof. Prashant Patil, Project Coordinator Prof. G. B. Dhangale, Head of Department Prof. P. G. Deshmukh, and S. N. Shelke. The system is fully automated, reducing human intervention, and features a wireless communication facility to send information to the control room.
How Does the System Work?
Modern sensors and microcontrollers are used in the project. With the help of ultrasonic sensors, the arrival of the train is detected, its speed is measured, and the railway gate automatically closes and opens accordingly. If any obstacle is found on the track, the system immediately issues a notification to alert the train driver.
